Walks, Cycle Routes & Hire

The area

Whether it be picturesque villages, bustling market towns, historic houses and gardens or superb walks – we are the ideal base for your stay. In the immediate area, we have the Manifold valley and the historic Thor’s cave, as well as villages, pubs, local shops and tea rooms. For families there are Chatsworth and the Heights of Abraham, plus numerous spots for cycling, pond-dipping and picnics.

Cycle & Hire

The Manifold Trail is 200 yards away and is a favourite trail for walkers and cyclists alike.  It follows the old route of the disused Leek and Manifold Light railway through the Manifold and Hamps valleys to Waterhouses for nine miles. Walk or Cycle

Thor’s Cave can be found in the Manifold Valley which is approx 76 metres (250ft) above the valley offering magnificent views of the surrounding landscape.  Thors cave dates back for at least 50,000 years and was home to stone age dwellers. Ecton Hill once the richest copper mine in England can be found at the foot of the Manifold Trail.

For the more adventurous, The Roaches rocks are close by offering climbing and walking with stunning views over to the Snowdonia mountains on clear days.

Tissington Trail & Carsington Water

The Tissington Trail is a scenic route 13 miles in length running from Ashbourne to Parsley Hay and can be joined at Hartington.

Carsington Water is 14 miles away and has an eight mile long circuit around the reservoir. There are wildlife viewing points around the shore.  A large modern visitor centre includes children’s play area, water sports centre, restaurant and shops.  Carsington water also offers fly fishing.
